After its reveal last month, the Bendix-backed #888 Supercheap Auto Chevrolet Camaro made its competition debut over the weekend at the fifth round of the 2023 Supercars Championship – the Betr Darwin Triple Crown. With Zane Goddard behind the wheel for its maiden voyage, the #888 Supercheap Auto Camaro was ready to tackle Race 13, 14, and 15 of the 2023 Championship, featuring a special Indigenous-themed livery to commemorate the Darwin event. "The livery looks fantastic. The students at Racing Together did a brilliant job with the artwork,” Goddard said. "It was amazing for Supercheap Auto to allow them to have some flexibility in the design, allowing them to incorporate some cool colours and elements into the artwork.
Friday’s practice sessions would kick start the weekend with Zane getting the hang of his new race contender. Practice 1 would see the #888 Supercheap Auto Camaro go 26th fastest around Hidden Valley Raceway with a best time of 1m07.62s. Zane would turn the pace up for Practice 2, knocking almost a full second off his previous time to a 1m06.63s best lap, placing him at 17th fastest in the session.
Qualifying for Race 13 would kick off Saturday’s on-track antics with Zane piloting the #888 Supercheap Auto Camaro to a 15th in Q1 before ultimately qualifying for P18 in Q3 thanks to a 1m06.46s best time. The lights would go out on Race 13 later in the day with Zane fighting a dramatic race, ultimately crossing the chequered flag in P22 to cap off Saturday’s efforts. Zane had the following to say after Race 13.
Zane Goddard: “The start of the race was super positive. I got a really good launch which allowed me to pass quite a few cars. We were in a good position and I think we could have conserved our position well but then we had the first safety car come out. We thought the safety car in theory was going to help us because we are a one car team, whereas there would be a lot of double stacking happening for the rest of pitlane. If pitlane had run a little smoother it would’ve been a good thing – there was a lot happening. I ran into the back of (James) Courtney and then I got rear-ended and did a bit of bodywork damage, resulting in us losing a fair few places. I could of maybe pushed a little harder, at the end it felt like there was a little more left in the tyres, which is a good learning to take into tomorrow. The racing is so close between the cars, in the end we just didn’t quite have enough pace today. We’ll take the learnings from today and try to deliver some solid results tomorrow.”
Sunday would begin with the qualifying session for Race 14, with Zane managing a P20 qualifying result to start Race 14 thanks to a 1m06.52s best lap. Race 15 Qualifying would follow directly afterwards with Zane placing the #888 Supercheap Auto Camaro at P16 on the grid for the start of Race 15 with a 1m06.32s best lap. Zane would go on to earn a P21 finish for Sunday’s first race before capping off the weekend with a P24 result for Race 15.
After their debut round, Supercheap Auto Racing and Zane Goddard find themselves with 76 points on the leaderboard. The #888 Supercheap Auto Camaro returns in September with Craig Lowndes entering the fold when the Supercars Championships heads to Victoria for the 2023 Penrite Oil Sandown 500, running from September 15-17.
