Bendix has enhanced its clever Ultimate Tow™ Electric Brake Controller, introducing new technology that makes the unit suitable for use with both 12V and 24V vehicle electrical systems.

Previously only available as a 12V unit, the latest generation broadens the controller’s appeal with additional 24V capabilities. While it remains a perfect pairing for popular vehicles such as the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux, LandCruiser and many others, compatibility now extends to truck models such as the Isuzu N Series, Hino 300 Series and similar commercial vehicles with 24V systems. Such trucks are widely seen on work sites and are increasingly being used as tow vehicles for recreational pursuits – think oversized caravans and boats.

Like its predecessor, Bendix’s latest Ultimate Tow™ Electric Brake Controller was locally developed and tested by Bendix engineers in Australia, and benefits from a bespoke braking algorithm that ensures outstanding reliability and performance in demanding conditions. It’s also compatible with the AL-KO ESC systems fitted to many caravans and trailers.

The latest Bendix Ultimate Tow™ electric brake controller is now compatible with both 12V and 24V vehicle electrical systems, providing added versatility and appeal.

How it works
The Ultimate Tow™ Electric Brake Controller helps activate and precisely control the braking force of the electric brakes in the caravan or trailer, whenever the driver in the tow vehicle applies the brakes.

The trailer’s brake force can be easily adjusted by turning the controller’s dial – left for a lower setting or right for a higher setting. This adjustment is needed when descending steep hills or mountain roads, safeguarding the driver with additional braking control. For night driving, the control dial is equipped with an in-built LED for better visibility.

In the event of ‘trailer sway’, Ultimate Tow™ also features an override button (incorporated within the adjustment dial) – when pressed the trailer brakes are applied independently without needing to activate the tow vehicle brakes, aligning the trailer with the tow vehicle. Other safety features include an open circuit and trailer disconnection indicator.

Inside the cabin, the adjustment dial sits neatly, fitting into the smallest of knock-out panels, maintaining interior aesthetics.

Installation
The Ultimate Tow™ controller kit includes everything needed for installation for hassle-free fitment.

With 1.28m of cabling, vehicle owners are given the flexibility to mount the control unit in a variety of under dash or under seat locations. The control unit itself features rugged aluminium construction meaning it can be installed at any angle.

To maintain cabin aesthetics, only a single small hole is required to fit the dial and it can be positioned in the smallest of knock-out dash panels.

No interference with vehicle driving aids
Unlike some brake controllers on the market, Bendix Ultimate Tow™ won’t interfere with the advanced safety systems and driving aids of modern vehicles, such as adaptive cruise control and autonomous emergency systems. It also allows drivers to move seamlessly between on and off-road situations, boosting user friendliness and peace of mind.

Braking control is simple to adjust: left for a lower setting and right for higher. There's also an override button integrated within the dial to help manage trailer sway.

When do you need an electric brake controller?
Electric brake controllers provide a much safer and controlled towing experience, and in many cases, they’re also legally required. In Australia and New Zealand, if the trailer caravan or camper has a Gross Trailer Mass (GTM) – the weight of the trailer with everything in it – of over 750kg, it likely has electric brakes. If the trailer exceeds 2,000kg of GTM, it must have a braking system that is controllable from the tow vehicle. This is where the Bendix Ultimate Tow™ comes in, allowing vehicle owners to control the braking force of their trailer from the driver’s seat.

The new Bendix Ultimate Tow™ Electric Brake Controller is available from leading automotive, 4x4 and camping outlets across Australia and New Zealand and is backed by a generous 3-year warranty.

Bendix's new Ultimate Tow™ electric brake controller provides a safer and more controlled braking experience, particularly with heavier trailers and caravans. Legally, towables that exceed a Gross Trailer Mass of 2,000kg require a braking system that is controllable from the tow vehicle.
