Selecting a brake pad to suit your customer's vehicle is an important decision. Having established that the brake pads need replacement and having interviewed the customer to get an idea of the driving style and typical applications, considerations such as low noise, low dust, rotor and pad wear can influence a choice but how much importance is placed on the pad to stop a vehicle effectively and safely? Would you fit a cheaper brake pad and potentially sacrifice brake performance?

To demonstrate the potential performance variations that can be experienced between different quality pads, we tested two sets of brake pads on the FMP Group B8E4-55 Dynamometer in Ballarat Victoria. One was Bendix General CT, the other was a low grade, low cost imported pad. Both were references to suit a Holden Commodore.

"We replaced the first rotors after he had done 350,000 km. We change the brake pads before they are down too low so the surface temperature doesn't increase too much. If you keep the maintenance up and don't let the brake pads get down too low, you generally get better mileage out of your discs and your pads." Mark explained.

He said that he recommended Bendix Heavy Duty pads to customers after assessing the vehicle, its use and the way people drive.
